Questions
Phone requirements, how to set up a session, and what to expect from PuttSim.
Getting started
What is PuttSim?
PuttSim is a home putting simulator for indoor golf putting practice. You roll real putts on a putting mat, your phone camera reads the start line and speed of each one, and the app plays the putt out on a virtual green at the distance you choose.
Do I need the mat?
Yes. PuttSim reads your putts from the marks on the mat, so the app needs it. The mat and the app launch together as one kit.
What comes in the kit?
The kit includes the PuttSim mat (14 inches by 50 inches) and access to the app. A stand that holds your phone above the mat is planned as an option. Final contents and pricing will be announced at launch.
When can I get it?
PuttSim is coming soon to iPhone and Android. Join the waitlist and we will email you when the kit is ready.
Phone and equipment
Which phones work with PuttSim?
PuttSim is being built for iPhone and Android. Android testing is furthest along, and iPhone testing is next. You need a phone with a rear camera and a flashlight. We will publish the supported models and the minimum software versions before launch.
Does my phone need to be new or expensive?
No. Early testing runs on an entry-level Android phone. Very slow phones can struggle to keep up with the camera, so the app checks your camera speed and warns you if it is too slow.
What golf ball and putter should I use?
Any putter works. A plain white golf ball is best, because the app finds the ball by its brightness against the dark mat.
Can I show the game on my TV?
In testing, the app can show the course on a TV while your phone watches the mat. Casting to a Samsung TV with Smart View works on Android. iPhone casting, such as AirPlay, is planned but not tested yet. You can also play on the phone screen alone.
Setting up a session
How do I set up a session?
- Lay the mat flat on a hard, level floor with the ring at the end nearest you.
- Put your phone on a stand about 36 inches (90 cm) above the mat, with the camera pointing straight down and the mat's marks in view.
- Open the app and choose a mode, a course and a green speed.
- The app turns on the flashlight and finds the mat's marks by itself. Wait until it says it is ready.
- Place a ball in the ring and putt toward the far end of the mat.
- Watch the putt play out on the virtual green. If it does not drop, the app sets up your next putt.
How do I hold the phone above the mat?
The phone needs to sit about 36 inches above the mat, looking straight down. A floor tripod with a boom arm and a phone clamp can do this. We are testing stands and will offer one with the kit. The app corrects small tilts automatically, but keep the phone steady while you putt.
Where should I set it up?
Indoors, in a well-lit room, on a flat and firm floor. Soft carpet can slow the ball or push it off line, so a hard surface, or a rigid board under the mat, works best. Leave clear space at the far end of the mat and room to swing. Garages and basements work if the lights are on. Very dark rooms are not reliable yet.
Why does the app use the flashlight?
The flashlight lights the mat evenly so the camera can read the marks and track the ball. The camera and flashlight use extra battery and can warm the phone, so plug in for long sessions.
What if the app cannot read my putt?
It tells you and asks for another putt. Check that the room lights are on, the phone is steady, and the mat is flat and clean. A very light tap or a very hard putt is harder to measure than a normal one.
Using the app
What can I do in the app?
Practice Green lets you pick any distance and break. Putt 9 and Putt 18 play a scored round hole by hole and track your strokes gained and putting handicap. Drills and games are in development.
How far can I putt?
The mat reads the start of each putt, and the app plays the rest out on the virtual green. You can choose holes from short putts out to 50 feet. The longest putts are marked as approximate.
How accurate is it?
In early testing against high-speed video, normal-speed putts measured within about 1 degree of direction and within about 10 percent of speed. Very light taps and very hard putts are less exact, and the app marks hard and long putts as approximate. Accuracy depends on good light and a steady phone, and we keep testing.
Is the putting handicap an official handicap?
No. It is a practice number the app calculates from your strokes gained over your recent rounds. It is not a USGA or World Handicap System handicap.
Cost and support
What does the app cost?
Pricing will be announced at launch. The app is planned as a subscription with a free trial, billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play. You can cancel any time in your store account settings.
